THE 2007-2008 SEASON

Six Women

6 WOMEN WITH BRAIN DEATH OR EXPIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW” A MUSICAL COMIC EVENT OF SKETCHES AND SONGS AT THE GHENT PLAYHOUSE FROM APRIL 4 THROUGH APRIL 20

Artistic director Tom Detwiler has selected for The Ghent Playhouse’s musical entree of the season, the fast-paced musical satire by Mark Houston and collaborators, “6 Women With Brain Death Or Expiring Minds Want To Know.” The production opens on Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. and runs for the usual three-performance three weekends until Sunday afternoon, April 20.

“6 Women...” is an irreverent look at contemporary life and pop culture from a feminine standpoint. In the writers’ points of view, life for the modern American woman can be as bizarre as tabloid newspaper headlines ("Grocery Shopping Linked to Menopause!" or "Women Goes Berserk on Freeway - Four Truck Drivers Wasted!"). It’s a world of cowgirls and toll road runaways, prom queens and genetically challenged Ken and Barbie dolls, and a detour through a Disney-fied forest where Bambi and Rambo collide. Mark Houston wrote the music and lyrics and collaborated on the book with six actor/writers: Cheryl Benge, Christy Brandt, Rosanna E. Coppedge,Valerie Fagan, Ross Freese, Sandee Johnson and Peggy Phar Wilson.

This is not your average Broadway musical! However there are plenty of life’s absurdities to laugh about here. Director Detwiler says,” I found way over-the-top comic situations, hysterical dialogue, some really hummable songs and a group of characters who could easily be your next-door neighbor or that person in your mirror.”

Paul Leyden is, once again, the music director. Familiar to playhouse audiences are Cathy Lee-Visscher of Valatie and Sally McCarthy of Austerlitz, both recently seen in the Panto as well as numerous other productions. Maria Clark of Valatie and Deborah McDermott of Valatie also are familiar faces to Playhouse audiences. Rounding out the “6 women” are newcomers Betsy Colhoun of Mill River, Massachusetts and Nicole Corey of Ghent.

Behind the scenes, but of equal importance to this production which requires a versatile set and multiple costume changes, are Bill Camp, designing the sets and lighting, Joanne Maurer, creating the costumes and DeNola Perreten, who is rounding up the props. Overseeing it all to ensure everything runs smoothly is producer Donna Knoll.

“6 Women With Brain Death...” opens on Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. runs through Sunday, April 20 at 2 p.m. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 Ghent Playhouse members. This play is the witty, comedic writer McNally’s bittersweet valentine to the theatre showing how it has the power to change lives on both sides of the footlights.
